  • to advice and assist Government and other appropriate authorities in all matters concerning the experimental development and revision of curricula, textbooks and supplementary reading materials, when called upon to do so.
  • to regulate and fix prices of the publications for the society consistent with it is objects.
  • to develop curricula on the basis of research and recommend them to Government and other appropriate authorities for adoption.
Students
  • to assess utility of textbooks, teachers hand-books and other allied materials whether produced by the Bureau or not.
  • to undertake printing, sale and distribution of books and literature useful or necessary for advancement of education in all its branches.
  • to establish and maintain libraries to facilitate research in general and curriculum, syllabus and textbook production in particular.
  • to invest and deal with the funds of the society.
  • to acquire by gift, purchase, exchange lease, hire or otherwise howsoever any lands, buildings,easements, rights in common and any estate or interest for the furtherance of all or any of the objects of the Society.

  • to construct, maintain,repair, extend, alter, improve or develop any buildings or works necessary or convenient for the purposes of the society.
  • to borrow and raise money on the security or a mortgage, charge, hypothecate or pledge over all or any of the movable and immovable  properties belonging to the Society or in any other matter whatsoever.

  • to sell, mortgage, charge, lease, exchange and transfer or dispose of  all or any property, movable or immovable, of the society.
  • to pay out of the funds belonging to the society or out of any particular part of such funds all expenses of or incidental to the formation of the society and management and administration of the society including all rents, rates, taxes,outgoing and the salaries of the employees.
  • to draw make, accept, endorse and negotiate cheques, hundies, promissory notes or other negotiable instruments.

1. Stocking, utilization and accounting for the gift paper received by the Government of Maharashtra.
2. Implementing any scheme for free supply of books.
         
3. Assisting and advising the Government of Maharashtra, the Director of Education or other appropriate authority in sanctioning school textbooks for Standards I to VIII submitted by private authors or publishers.
4. Generally to do and execute all such lawful acts, deeds, matters and things as are conductive or incidental to or for the attainment of the above objects or any of them.

                          
Planning and Preparation of Textbooks

1. There are eight Language Subject Committees and eight Non-Language Committees working in the Bureau. They are entrusted with the responsibilities of preparing manuscripts of all the textbooks based on the syllabus
approved by the State Government.The expert members are drawn from different levels of education i.e. primary, secondary, college, university and the literary world. The teacher educators and the educationists are also taken on the subject committees. The academic officer of the Bureau works as the Member-Secretary of each of the committees.
                       
3. The Bureau also publishes textbooks and teachers handbooks of Non Language subjects like Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Environmental Studies, Physical Education & Health and Work Experience.

2. To enhance the visual appeal of the textbook, well-known artists are invited to illustrate the books. The textbooks published are screened from the stand-point of national integration and the democratic values. 
Every textbook printed and published by the Bureau is authenticated before it undergoes reprinting. Updating of the textbook before reprinting is a regular feature of the Bureau's activities . The textbooks are published in eight media i.e.

Marathi-the State language, Hindi-the National language, English-The International Language, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada, Telugu, and Sindhi (Arabic and Devnagari scripts.) The Bureau undertakes the production and distribution of language and non-language textbooks of the
secondary and higher secondary classes.These manuscripts are prepared by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education,Pune. The academic department of the Bureau is in constant touch with the literary and educational institutions and the other educational departments of the State  and other States to keep itself abreast of the latest information, innovations and developments in the different fields.
